Silence is Golden

Finals are almost upon us. I was starting to feel a little extremely overwhelmed when I stumbled across a beautiful picture as I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed.

It read: Today has been declared: NO TALKING DAY! It proceeded to give directions about how to make that happen.

I tried it and it worked beautifully. All of my classes are supposed to be studying for their rapidly approaching finals. (Yes…To all of my students who are reading this, I do expect you to study.)  Instead of me monitoring each class and making sure they were quiet, it became a game.  They could use all kinds of non-verbal ways to communicate. Writing. Sign Language.  Charades. Drawing Pictures. Interpretive Dance. It was quite amusing to watch. Aside from a few whispers (and the one student who decided to color on her neighbor’s scalp while he slept), every class stayed silent. Most of them studied.  None of us wanted to pull our hair out.

Clean Desk…time to grade.

I spent the entire morning grading papers, writing finals, responding to emails, and finding my desk. There has been a mountain of papers and books that has been my constant companion since MarchFebruary…. okay November. I had several students just about fall over in shock when they saw the actual surface of my desk. I still have a long way to go, but  this took an encouraging chunk out of my to-do list.

The morning gave me a little bit of hope that maybe, just maybe, I will survive to the end of this school year.

Now back to the grading…

  1. So glad you shared this idea with me! So much to do, so little time – amazing how a little silence and concentrated focus can give students direction and teachers a little hope of a finished to do list! (BTW, my desk doesn’t look anything like yours – yet!)
